The Big Beach in Makena State Park is now stuffed with lifeguards - a big improvement as the surf cab be rough there.

On May 1, 2009, Maui county lifeguards (aka Ocean Safety Officers) took their posts at Makena State Park on two new towers. Left unguarded since the mid 1990’s because of liability issues, a memorandum of agreement now allows Maui county to staff lifeguards in Makena State Park.

Towers are located at both ends of the park popularly known as Big Beach. Lifeguards will be on duty from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week, and will be linked to the county’s 911 emergency response system.

The Maui News has a nice article at

Big Beach is one of the most beautiful stretches of undeveloped beaches remaining in Hawaii. If you haven’t been there, go.
