| PART 1. We started at 7:30 am of June 18, 2007 on our trip to the Aquarium (a.k.a. Fishbowl) – the largest of the coves along the north end of the La Perouse Bay according to Maui Revealed guidebook by Andrew Doughty. We definitely recommend buying this book, this trip report is not a substitute for the map and trail description found in it. We drove from Kihei, through Wailea, Makena, Kina’u Peninsula (created by lava during the last eruption of Haleakala in 1790), and arrived to the La Perouse Bay, located at the end of Makena Alanui Road, approximately 7 miles south from Wailea.
We parked the car and started on our way to find the entry to the trail. Here was one rare place where the description in Maui Revealed wasn’t too clear and we missed the entry at first. So did another party who looked for it just before us, so I decided to clarify here and post a couple of pictures. So, we started to walk from the parking back on Makena Alanui. There was a barbed wire on our left. Right where the wire ended there was an entry to the trail. One has to step over a rock wall and it really looks like trespassing of a private estate, this is why it’s so easy to miss. |
