On May 1, 2009, Maui county lifeguards (aka Ocean Safety Officers) took their posts at Makena State Park on two new towers. Left unguarded since the mid 1990’s because of liability issues, a memorandum of agreement now allows Maui county to staff lifeguards in Makena State Park.
Towers are located at both ends of the park popularly known as Big Beach. Lifeguards will be on duty from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week, and will be linked to the county’s 911 emergency response system.

The Maui News has a nice article at

Big Beach is one of the most beautiful stretches of undeveloped beaches remaining in Hawaii. If you haven’t been there, go.

Yummy Lunch at Three's Bar & Grill
A new restaurant called Three’s Bar and Grill has opened in Kalama Village in Kihei. Located in the former Bada Bing site, they serve lunch and dinner inside or on the outdoor lanai. Three’s is a venture from a trio of Maui chefs serving a fusion of Hawaiian, Southern and Eastern cuisine with steak and seafood specialities.
Our friends ate there today for lunch. Here’s their comments: “Great lunch, great service,…Rick had the pulled pork and liked it. I had a garden burger with hummus, sprouts on a fresh baked bun….and a nice kula greens salad came with lilikoi dressing….each $8. Ate out on their deck. It was cleaned up and inviting compared with Bada Bing! We’ll return..thanks for the suggestion.”
We had lunch at Three’s Bar and Grill this week sitting outside on the deck. I had the Fresh Hawaiian Catch Blackened with Three’s Cajun Spice… Smoked Tomato Coulis, Finished with Avocado and Tropical Fruit Relish. It cam with an Ocean Salad and was quite good. My wife had the Southwestern Pasta Linguine tossed with Cilantro and Chipotle Pesto, Char-Grilled Corn, Roasted Red Bells and Asparagus Tims, finished with Citris Gremolata. She added a grill chicken breast. It also was very good.
We asked about the BYOB policy. It turns out their liquor license has not been granted yet. Until it is (likely in April) you can bring your own wine or beer. They will uncork it without a charge and provide glasses. No hard liquor allowed.
Call 808-879-3133 to verify they are open. We were going for dinner on Tuesday night and found they were closed.
